What It Means: Reading in Context

This final verse of Al-Asr provides the exception to the preceding statement about loss. The complete verse keeps faith, good deeds, mutual counsel towards truth and mutual counsel towards endurance together. The other two verses of the surah are linked for reading as a whole. These verses bring together patience, prayer, testing and perseverance. The sequence in Al-Baqarah 2:155–157 names experiences of loss and then describes the response of those who remember their return to Allah. Reading the sequence matters: a short quotation should not erase the reality of suffering.
