What It Means: Reading in Context

The selected passages include companionship, mercy, household life and prayer for family. They are a starting point for thoughtful reading, not a substitute for advice on the rights and responsibilities of marriage. Keep each quotation connected to its full verse, particularly where a passage discusses more than one matter. The English is a translation of meaning; use the source link to compare translations and consult qualified scholarship for detailed interpretation. Our reflections encourage everyday care, communication and kindness. They do not determine what anyone should do in a difficult or unsafe relationship, and should not be used to pressure another person.

O ye who believe! It is not lawful for you forcibly to inherit the women (of your deceased kinsmen), nor (that) ye should put constraint upon them that ye may take away a part of that which ye have given them, unless they be guilty of flagrant lewdness. But consort with them in kindness, for if ye hate them it may happen that ye hate a thing wherein Allah hath placed much good.
